Yoga Props: Enhancing Your Practice
This is the first of my blogs on yoga props. Using props in yoga can make your practice more accessible, comfortable, and deeply rewarding. Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced yogi, these tools help you find alignment, achieve poses safely, and deepen stretches. I provide some props in class but if you like to practice yoga at home, then it’s worth the small investment. Let’s explore the most common yoga props and how they can support your practice:
Yoga Bricks and Blocks
Benefits:
Provide extra height and stability in poses.
Help bridge the gap between you and the floor.
Support safe alignment and reduce strain.
Poses to Try:
Triangle Pose (Trikonasana): Place a block under your hand to stabilize.
Seated Forward Fold (Paschimottanasana): Rest your forehead or hands on a block.
Bridge Pose (Setu Bandhasana): Slide a block under your sacrum for support.
Yoga Straps
Benefits:
Increase reach and flexibility in stretches.
Help focus on alignment.
Perfect for deepening stretches without overstraining.
Poses to Try:
Seated Forward Bend (Paschimottanasana): Loop a strap around your feet for an extended stretch.
Dancer Pose (Natarajasana): Use the strap to hold your lifted foot if it’s out of reach.
Reclining Leg Stretch (Supta Padangusthasana): Extend the strap around your foot to stretch hamstrings.
Other Helpful Props
Bolsters and Cushions: Ideal for restorative yoga, seated poses, and prenatal support.
Knee Protection Pads: Provide cushioning for kneeling poses like Cat-Cow (Marjaryasana-Bitilasana).
Chairs: Great for supported poses, including Chair Twist or modified Downward Dog.
The Wall: Acts as a stabilizer in balancing poses, whilst doing a yogi squat and poses like Handstand.
Why Use Props?
Props encourage you to listen to your body and practice at your own pace. Whether you need a gentle stretch or deeper support, incorporating these tools can transform your yoga journey.
